With 7 of the 10 most devastating fires in California history occurring in the last decade, wildfire research has never been more important. Stanford's Big Earth Wildland Fire Challenge Hackathon, which is currently running with Stanford, seeks to find innovative solutions to wildland fire prediction, prevention, and/or evacuation.

ZestyAI collaborated with Hackathon organizers Derek Fong, Sr. Research Engineer, and professor Margot Gerritsen to present Hackathon student participants with unique wildfire camera detection and satellite projects. Attila Toth (ZestyAI CEO) and Michael Ulin (ZestyAI Head of Machine Learning) spoke with students about how AI is being used today to measure risk and the challenges behind wildfire detection by cameras and satellites.

“We challenged students to find ways to improve tracking of wildfires from satellite imagery and to detect wildfires via wildfire tracking cameras,” said Toth. “We hope to spark innovation around preventing, mitigating, and responding to climate catastrophes in the student body. We’re looking forward to more opportunities to collaborate on climate risk with Stanford and its peers.”

“It’s great to know that ZestyAI is available to students as a resource. There are times when a commercial perspective can provide unique insights to define and tackle problems”, added Mr. Fong.
